A project is just a construction experience for students that takes place at school, supported by HIA youthBuild and their teacher. The project can be designed by a teacher or students; or adapted from a project in our vault. The intention is students participate in varied trades and will learn in a safe and supportive environment.
youthBuild projects created by our participating schools have been diverse. They have included redeveloping workshops, building café shopfronts, indoor and outdoor furniture, landscaping, resources for volunteer organisations, community areas, outdoor kitchens, sheds, storage and cabinetry projects.
HIA youthBuild is holistic in support of teachers. We recognise the skills you have and your ability to build a positive learning experience for your students. However, we will provide you the assistance to coordinate and plan the project into a success. We can deliver through our association of members: knowledge, skills, mentorship, and or materials to maximise the potential of the project's learning experience.
The intention is students participate in varied trades and will learn in a safe and supportive environment. HIA are looking for enthusiastic teachers and dynamic school experiences to support.
Projects that make legacy improvements to the school community, where benefits are enjoyed by future students, are valued.
Community spaces, outdoor areas and learning resources such as gardens, shared cultural places, or further improvement to or updating of existing school infrastructure can be developed into youthBuild projects.
To begin a project, just reach out to your HIA youthBuild Officer and share your ideas. After the initial contact with a youthBuild Officer, you will receive a proposal document and guidelines for how to apply along with support for completing your application.
When HIA receives your completed application and a letter supporting the project from the school, it will be considered. If approved for funding, your school can commence the project.
All youthBuild projects are funded through application proposal and agreement with HIA and are independent of the learning program. Projects are coordinated until completion with the Final Report by the nominated lead teacher in conjunction with your youthBuild Officer and HIA.
To be approved, a project must show:
An application needs to be supported by school leaders, the teachers involved, and developed in consultation with students wishing to participate to be approved.
Projects are either run at the participating high school or the nearest Trade Training Centre operated by Department of Education, Children and Young People.
Each project is timetabled in the proposal by the school and will be completed within a school year.
