HIA youthBuild is a fun, interactive and free opportunity to gain practical experience in different areas of the construction industry.

The learning program introduces various trade areas, developing students’ understanding of the diverse nature of the building and construction industry.

The fully funded program is completely free to participate in.

It is generously supported by the Tasmanian building and construction industry training board, Keystone Tasmania.

What do I need to do?

youthBuild is coordinated by a lead teacher at your school in coordination with your HIA youthBuild Officer. You will be notified of any consents required for your child to participate. Schools will be your access point to discuss the participation of your child.

An apprenticeship or traineeship is a great way to pursue a career in the building and construction industry via a structured pathway. An apprenticeship typically occurs after finishing school and combines on the job training with an employer with a formal study arrangement with TAFE or a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

HIA youthBuild and your education pathway

There are options to begin an Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbAs) during or at the completion of youthBuild.

What's it like?

Available while you work towards finishing schooling your school-based apprenticeship is a timetabled learning program structured around attendance at school, TasTAFE, or other RTO, and paid time on the job with an employer.

When can I start?

The minimum age a student can enrol in an apprenticeship or traineeship is 15 years. Under these pathways, students will be earning a nationally recognised qualification. improving employability and the opportunity to earn an income in an ever-growing industry.
