About HIA youthBuild

Our goals and the opportunities available when participating in HIA's collaborative construction youth program.

HIA youthBuild brings together industry leaders to drive an innovative “work at school” program based on strong partnerships between schools, industry, business, and local communities.

The program involves HIA facilitating schools with a Learning Program and support for Projects that provide new and exciting opportunities for young people to enter the industry via real work programs undertaken at school.

youthBuild goals

  • Grow a successful and sustainable workforce by increasing diversity within the building and construction industry
  • Provide career opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Encourage young women to take on trades
  • Support individuals facing disadvantage or other barriers to employment
  • Ensure skills growth in rural and regional communities.

Expanding opportunities

What are the new opportunities for participating schools?

In 2023, HIA will now provide for individual schools to participate outside of the Construction and Architecture Package of Learning (PoL). These schools can engage in projects that are adapted to the resources available to those schools. HIA will coordinate for schools outside of PoL to be either directly involved with the Trade Training Centres statewide, or to deliver on site or at school a rich industry experience for students.
How does HIA support the program?

HIA youthBuild programs are developed and supported by officers that are available to support all aspects of the program. Teachers and schools will be supported to coordinate real-world industry experiences for students that are aligned with learning outcomes of the school proposal for the youthBuild program.
What reporting must be completed?
{{ propApi.expandedIcon }} {{ propApi.collapsedIcon }}
HIA youthBuild is an industry aligned, future focused program funded by Keystone. HIA is required to report on the goals and outcomes of the program in line with our funding agreement. As such, HIA youthBuild participating schools are required to document their build process and provide a final report on the learning outcomes to assist with reporting and validation. Due to this commitment, HIA youthBuild Officers will provide access to proposal documentation, data collection permissions, interim and final reporting templates, and support to streamline the process on teachers/schools to meet these guidelines.

Update on participating schools

In 2023 HIA continues to support the eleven schools across the State participating in the Construction and Architecture Package of Learning (PoL). These schools undertake youthBuild electives (comprising 6 units covering various trades and design) which provide practical underpinning to the program. These electives are integrated with the students' ongoing education aligned to the Australian curriculum.
