About HIA youthBuild

Our goals and the opportunities available when participating in HIA's collaborative construction youth program.

HIA youthBuild brings together industry leaders to drive an innovative “work at school” program based on strong partnerships between schools, industry, business, and local communities.

The program helps schools deliver a structured learning program and supports hands-on projects that give students exciting opportunities to explore the building industry. Students can take part in real work experiences while still at school, gaining skills and confidence that prepare them for future careers in construction.

  • Provide career opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Encourage young women to take on trades
  • Support individuals facing disadvantage or other barriers to employment

Expanding opportunities
What are the new opportunities for participating schools?
{{ propApi.expandedIcon }} {{ propApi.collapsedIcon }} From 2026, schools can engage in projects that are adapted to the resources available at their school alongside the Trade Foundations curriculum. HIA will help schools connect with Trade Training Centres across Tasmania or support them to deliver hands-on, industry-based experiences on site or at school, giving students real-world opportunities to explore the building and construction trades. 
How does HIA support the program?
{{ propApi.expandedIcon }} {{ propApi.collapsedIcon }} Trade Foundations is developed by HIA YouthBuild as a structured program that enables schools to coordinate authentic industry experiences aligned with their proposed learning outcomes. 
What reporting must be completed?

HIA youthBuild is a future-focused, industry-aligned program supported by the Tasmanian Government. As part of our funding agreement, HIA is required to report on the program’s goals and outcomes.

To support this, participating schools are asked to document their build process and submit a final report outlining student learning outcomes. This helps us validate the impact of the program and meet reporting requirements.

To make this easier for schools and teachers, HIA YouthBuild Officers will provide:

  • Proposal documentation 
  • Data collection permission forms 
  • Interim and final reporting templates 
  • Ongoing support to streamline the reporting process.
